Hà Mạnh Thắng
biography
Born in 1980 in Thai Nguyen, Thang graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 2004. Thang is one of Vietnam’s most important painters.
Previously known for his colourful and satirical paintings that juxtapose Vietnam’s past and its rich heritage with fashionable images of consumerist culture, Thang’s current body of work is more critically introspective and subdued. By blurring and reducing significant monuments and historical relics such as the Hue Citadel, Bitexco Financial Tower and the Vietnamese royal costumes to their basic forms, the artist questions the connections between these buildings and objects we construct and the ideals, meanings and powers they embody.
Besides participating in numerous notable international group exhibitions in Singapore, Hongkong, Thailand, Germany, Hungary, Thang has held many solo exhibitions, most recently including ‘ELLIPSES’ Vincom Center for Contemporary Art, Hanoi – 2018; ‘Passage of Time/ A Poetic Meditation’ – Affinity ART gallery, Hongkong – 2017; ‘The Lake’ – Art Taipei, Tawain – 2016; ‘Khói Sóng’ – Gallerie Quynh, Ho chi minh City – 2015; ‘Fading Dream, Disintegrating Realities’ - Manzi Art Space, Hanoi and Thavibu Gallery, Bangkok - 2014,
