  • </3

</3 - May 19, 2024 April 20, 2024 Hà Đào Manzi is pleased to present </3 - an open studio by Ha Dao , a photographer, writer and programme coordinator at Matca. </3 introduces works grounded in real tragedies learned through the press and social media. As media sensations, both stories feature a female outlaw as the protagonist. Amassing two uncommon fates, </3 deals with romance, heartbreak and crime in Vietnam's recent past. Entrenched are her ongoing inquiries into the creative and ethical implications of the camera, or more specifically, of appropriating stories not of one's own. </𝟯 - 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗯𝘆 𝗛𝗮̀ Đ𝗮̀𝗼 Opening party: 06.00 PM Friday night, 19 April, 2024 On display: 11.00 AM - 07.00PM (Tue - Sun) from 20 Apr until 19 May 2024 At Manzi Exhibition Space, no. 2 ngõ Hàng Bún, Ba Đình, Hà Nội Free Entrance __________________ Juggling with a variety of visual information (photographs, audio recordings, video footages, found and reconstructed materials), in this open studio, Hà proposes a narrative context in which the pure function endowed in the photography almost proved futile: the large volume of visual statement is exposed, the voice of knowledge is clear and directly perceived without any filter, vivid details constitute the very raw material of ‘that-has-been’ yet at the same time can very well say nothing at all as what represented can be immediately yielded to our perception but extremely elusive once one aims to process them to grasp the whole story. Such interesting narrative context, in turn, provokes questions about what was not allowed/impossible to be represented, about the "blind field "- parts of the scene outside the frame, and reiterates an often overlooked issue of our age which is unfailingly manipulated by mass consumption of information and social media: every photograph/recording only tells a part of the story. The pursuit of truth (in terms of informational aspect) is impossible here, </3 , however, invites us - in a role of Spectator, to embark on a journey of exploring the 'sentimental’ reasons which interested Roland Barthes: 'I want to explore it not as a Question or a Theme but as a Wound: I see, I feel, hence I notice, I observe and I think. • Into Thin Air | Manzi Art Space | Hà Nội

Into Thin Air A public art project A public space is a space that does not belong to anyone, but at the same time, to all. It is a site that doesn’t just hold its inhabitants’ history and memory, but also reflects their personal and collective identity. It is a place that is often neglected or forgotten, but has the potential to become a zone for creativity and freedom. About “Into Thin Air” is a long-term public art project, initiated and curated by Manzi Art Space with a view to building awareness and appreciation for art – particularly contemporary art – among the public, to helping artists develop independent practices whilst encouraging their involvement in social development within the current context of Vietnam. Into Thin Air takes art and creativity outside of its conventional comfort zones (i.e. the museum, gallery, art space etc.) and into public spaces. For the project, all participating artists were asked to consider their everyday urban spaces, or places in Hanoi that are significant to them and their community, and create artistic interventions for the spaces. The artists were also asked to take into consideration the city’s historical, political and social characteristics, to be more open and socially engaging, and to make works which encourage the public to participate or interact with it. For the project, The first edition of Into Thin Air took place successfully from 9 to 19 April 2016 in Hanoi. Ten artworks and projects in the form of site-specific/context-responsive installations, interactive video works and sound installations were placed around Hanoi. A smartphone app was created, functioning as a “treasure map” to aid the audience in “hunting” for and getting information about the works. Following the success of the first edition of Into Thin Air, the second installment continues to explore the core format of the project. It also furthers and broadens its scope by tackling a different type of public space: the Internet. Into Thin Air’s 2nd edition includes a series of virtual artworks (virtual installations, performances, sound-walks and video arts) which will exist permanently in 10 of Hanoi’s public spaces. Audience can view/ interact with a given artwork through a free online application using augmented reality (AR) technology which can be downloaded to their phone or tablet. All artworks exist virtually yet are only accessible at a particular site. This 2nd edition looks to promote the diversity of cultural expression to reiterate the importance of creating an enabling environment that encourages individuals and society as a whole to get access to and enjoy a wide range of cultural activities. Explore Participating Artists See more Nguyễn Huy An Born in 1982 in Hanoi and graduated from the Vietnam Fine Art University in 2008, Nguyen Huy An is considered one of the most dynamic and innovative artists of his generation. Huy An’s work has been a process of trying to dig into the darkness of psychology. Most of his projects have been underpinned by an obsession with memory and the complexities of a pessimistic perspective. From installations, performance art to paintings and sculptures, Huy An’s works are highly acclaimed by international art critics and curators for their introspective, simple and strong concepts. Tạ Minh Đức Born in 1991 in Hanoi, Tạ Minh Đức graduated from the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema in 2014. • Hồi Sóng

Hồi Sóng - April 7, 2024 March 25, 2024 Nhung Nguyễn, Zach Sch HỒI SÓNG - A research and sound installation project by Nhung Nguyen & Zach Sch The second physical form presented at manzi Opening: 11.00 PM Monday 25 March 2024 On display: 11.00 AM - 07.00 PM (Tue - Sun) from 25 Mar until 07 Apr 2024 Art project “Hồi Sóng", consisting of archival study and sound installation by two Vietnam-based artists Nhung Nguyễn and Zach Sch, is available in both digital form at hoisong.art and physical form at Manzi Exhibition Space. From the original intent of exploring the intangible cultural heritage, specifically the oral history documented in the historical archives, the artist duo adopts sound installation as their medium to explore the relationships between archived information and sound arts. Originally and spanning from the topics centered around the lives of soldiers and workers imported from French colonies in Africa and Vietnam, the project extends to historical brushstrokes of the peoples from Egypt, Algeria, Mali, Martinique and Indochina (composed of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) and their wartime assignments, living conditions, their feelings and memories reminisced 60 years after the end of World War II. Accordingly, the installation work aims to juxtapose the archival materials from the said topics with music and sound designs. The artist duo assesses archives’ respective socio-cultural contexts and their attached literary and musical materials to architect the recordings. While Nhung focuses on the oral recordings, Zach places greater emphasis on sound experiments. Presented at manzi as a second physical counterpart to the online platform (the first installaition was launched at Sàn Art, HCMC in 2021), our display will offer a thrilling reboot of the archive inviting the audience to join us and tune in the sounds, immerse themselves in the radio installation and interact with artifacts of the dim and distant past hardly be told. ________________________ ❗ The project is supported by: The Goethe-Institut Ho Chi Minh City The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam Nguyen Thien Dao Foundation Sàn Art Humboldt University of Berlin ❗ 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 to our friends who have helped us during the research and production of this project: Nguyễn Khiếu Anh,Jonathan Mayers, Mai Phương ARTWORKS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s)

  • Not All Dreams

Not All Dreams - September 26, 2016 September 9, 2016 Not All Dreams is a response to two exhibitions planned for August and September being cancelled for different reasons. Such seeming setbacks raise internal questions for manzi about the what, why and how of what we do, which can serve as points of departure for our programming. Not All Dreams is a visualisation of an ongoing conversation we have been having amongst ourselves and with collaborators about the different building blocks that comprise manzi and exploring what would happen if one or another is removed. INTO THIN AIR was the first such enquiry. Not All Dreams continues this internal evaluation made public. The former took the form of an exhibition in various public spaces, which originated from its curators asking “What can be done if there was no physical space to display art in?” The later takes as its focal point the perceived necessity of the realisation of every idea and explores this by way of a ‘visual discussion’, open to the public, and a focused internal conversation among curators and people who own and run art spaces. Both the public and internal aspects of Not All Dreams are invitations to ponder whether the dreams that ‘could’ be realised within the realm of manzi, are as potent as the ones that actually are. And it is an appeal to conceive of a dream without being weighed down by the constraints of having to realise it. Discussion starts: 7PM Friday 09 Sept Discussion pauses: Mon 26 Sept *The discussion is part of manzi’s art programme supported by CDEF of the Danish Embassy ARTWORKS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s)

  • CONSCIOUSNESS

CONSCIOUSNESS - January 20, 2015 January 12, 2015 Trịnh Cung ‘Consciousness’ featuring Trinh Cung's latest creations with 9 sketches and 7 large size oil paintings will mark the return of one of the most important artists of Saigon before 1975 after more than 20 years long of absence in the local art scene. ‘I haven’t shown my work to public for a long time as I felt depressed with everything I created, so I wrapped them up, locked them in a tube, brought them along with me with the hope to find a heaven, for me and for them. Now at the age of 77, I have realised that my artwork need to be free, they need to be alive and that’s why they are here, at manzi art space today’ - Trinh Cung. By setting up an ambiguous interplay between foreground and background, transforming his canvas into a composition of loose, organic forms, in this series of work, Trinh Cung has created a perpetual motion, candidly confronting themes of identity, sexuality and the fear of loss and abandonment. • ?!

?! - December 6, 2016 November 5, 2016 Nguyễn Đình Hoàng Việt ?! – a solo exhibition showcasing two new series of paintings by Huế based artist Nguyễn Đình Hoàng Việt. Having quietly made a name for himself in the past few years, Việt is best known for his trompe l’oeil portraits of rodents and fish looking peacefully content, trancelike, as if captured by a wonderful dream. Although playfully depicted, the works seriously have us question our eyes, as on closer inspection all the creatures turn out to be dead, for mice don’t lie face up when they sleep, and fish cannot breath without their gills. The latest work in the continuation of the animal series - presented as the first half of ?! - features flawlessly painted renditions of dead chickens, ducks and crabs. This time, however, they are flanked by comical exclamation marks and empty, black speech bubbles. The animals seem to be communicating something with us, but are ultimately failing to get their message across. How can they, really? For they are dead and we are not animals (or are we?!) The second half of ?! showcases Việt’s venture into a new area of interest - everyday objects - for which he has been producing 2D replicas of things we see and overlook daily with his trademark photorealist precision. Broken glass, a bent nail, pieces of paper and a wall crack are now the center of the stage. However, the obvious and mundane here is made obscure and abstract - not in terms of style but content. Objects perceived to serve a specific function are rendered useless: a painted nail cannot hold a piece of art, a painted crack cannot be fixed, a painted broken piece of glass cannot be swept up. Việt’s work – with its elements of light, school-boy humour – gives new input to the ever-evolving, decades-old conversation surrounding realism in art. Its ability to cause intrigue, elicit a giggle and give pause for contemplation is a reminder that the contested discussion of whether or not realist painting is relevant, or could be used as a medium for contemporary art, is not over. Yet. Likewise, painting is not dead. Yet. And may never be. Maybe… ?! *This exhibition is part of Manzi’s art programme supported by CDEF of the Danish Embassy ARTWORKS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s)

Nguyễn Nghĩa Cương biography Nguyen Nghia Cuong was born in 1973 in Bac Ninh. He graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Art in 1996 and is now living and working in Bac Ninh. Throughout the last decade, Cuong focused on the interference of conventional morale values and the utilitarian contemporary Vietnamese society. He has a satirical approach to discuss the impact of consumerism and a specific language to express his viewpoint. His main topics are consumerism, commercialisation and the relationship between people and he uses the packing boxes and newspapers with logos and brands as the canvas for his paintings using coloured powder. The usage of logos and brands may be related to western Pop art but the artworks still have their own local characteristics. Cuong has had five solo exhibitions and over ten group exhibitions.
