Lê Quý Tông
biography
Born in 1977 in Hanoi, graduated from the Hanoi Fine Art Institute in 2000, Le Quy Tong is one of important figures of Vietnamese contemporary art scene.
Time, memory, history, and the act of constantly questioning the essence of things and events – these are the driving forces behind Quy Tong’s ever-expanding practice and continuous exploration into different painting media. In recent years, he focused on the experimentation with a ‘input hybrid’ of painting, printing, decorated pattern and found imagery. As a starting point of any Tông’s painting, the images are sourced from historical archives & mass media and easily accessible by an online image search engine. Taken out of their original context, these visual elements are appropriated (by deconstruction and collage), reassembled together into something beyond space and time which ultimately can erase all boundaries of original contexts as well as any opposite sides of the initial narratives. Imagination is stimulated, feelings are evoked, thus, thoughts and interpretations can be liberated from political, moral and cultural discourses.
Le Quy Tong has participated in various local and international art events. His selected exhibitions recently includes: True Blue (Manzi Art Space, Hanoi, 2015); True Gold - Chapter I: ‘Passage to Freedom’ (dia Project, Ho Chi Minh City, 2016); True Gold - Chapter II: ‘The Loyalty’ (Vingallery, Ho Chi Minh City, 2018); True Gold - Chapter III: ‘Endgame’ (Flamingo DaiLai resort, Vinh Phuc, 2019).
His works are in the Bodnar Art Collection and Post Vidai’s Vietnam Contemporary Art Collection and various other private collections.
