Lê Thị Anh Yến
biography
Born in 1999 in Dak Lak, graduated from Ho Chi Minh University of Fine Arts, Yen is one of the new talents in the South Vietnamese’s art scene.
Using silk as the main medium, Yen's artworks focus on human figures, particularly young ladies engaged in everyday activities (bathing, combing hair or just resting) with a desire to disclose their uncommon elegance and beauty. Her depictions, while somewhat conventional in their typical portrait settings, are not ciliché and retain a feeling of freshness due to the use of humble backgrounds. In an arrangement influenced by Western-style portraiture, Anh Yen uses unorthodox features with a strong Asian flair mixed with the banalities of trivial objects as a backdrop to show the human body in its purest and most exposed form. The characters in Yen's paintings are therefore authentic and innocent, at times almost vulnerable, revealing the hidden implications of judgmental violence in a modern word increasingly regulated and assessed by visuality, appearance standard and physical norms.
