An art-in-public project for Hanoi | Dự án nghệ thuật cho công cộng của Hà Nội. Taking artwork out of the galleries and onto the streets. Turning viewers into co-creators. WHAT: 1 city 10 site-specific, contemporary artworks 10 public spaces. Into Thin Air A public art project A public space is a space that does not belong to anyone, but at the same time, to all. It is a site that doesn’t just hold its inhabitants’ history and memory, but also reflects their personal and collective identity. It is a place that is often neglected or forgotten, but has the potential to become a zone for creativity and freedom. About “Into Thin Air” is a long-term public art project, initiated and curated by Manzi Art Space with a view to building awareness and appreciation for art – particularly contemporary art – among the public, to helping artists develop independent practices whilst encouraging their involvement in social development within the current context of Vietnam. Into Thin Air takes art and creativity outside of its conventional comfort zones (i.e. the museum, gallery, art space etc.) and into public spaces. For the project, all participating artists were asked to consider their everyday urban spaces, or places in Hanoi that are significant to them and their community, and create artistic interventions for the spaces. The artists were also asked to take into consideration the city’s historical, political and social characteristics, to be more open and socially engaging, and to make works which encourage the public to participate or interact with it. For the project, The first edition of Into Thin Air took place successfully from 9 to 19 April 2016 in Hanoi. Ten artworks and projects in the form of site-specific/context-responsive installations, interactive video works and sound installations were placed around Hanoi. A smartphone app was created, functioning as a “treasure map” to aid the audience in “hunting” for and getting information about the works. Following the success of the first edition of Into Thin Air, the second installment continues to explore the core format of the project. It also furthers and broadens its scope by tackling a different type of public space: the Internet. Into Thin Air’s 2nd edition includes a series of virtual artworks (virtual installations, performances, sound-walks and video arts) which will exist permanently in 10 of Hanoi’s public spaces. Audience can view/ interact with a given artwork through a free online application using augmented reality (AR) technology which can be downloaded to their phone or tablet. All artworks exist virtually yet are only accessible at a particular site. This 2nd edition looks to promote the diversity of cultural expression to reiterate the importance of creating an enabling environment that encourages individuals and society as a whole to get access to and enjoy a wide range of cultural activities. • Nguyễn Ban Ga

Nguyễn Ban Ga biography Nguyen Ban Ga (b.1979, Hanoi) studied at Vietnam University of Fine Arts. He is a co-founder of Hanoi Link – a pioneering video art group in Hanoi in the early 2000s – and a member of Nhà Sàn Collective, the first artist-run experimental art space in northern Vietnam. Ban Ga’s earlier practice combined a range of media, from painting and performance to video art, revolving around personal memory, history, and the grip of ideology in contemporary society. Recently, he shifts to hand-craft and design as the anchors of his artistic language, and experiments with the materials bound closely to the artist’s own memory and private life, to test the limits of the material, as well as how they stage a story and lend it weight. He has taken part in numerous local art projects, including 'ripples of the day' - solo show at Manzi Art Space, Hanoi - 2026; “6 v 12”, the group open studio at Manzi Art Space, Hanoi – 2025; the group show: EXHIBITION, part of the project“Skylines With Flying People 3” – Nhà Sàn Collective, Hanoi – 2016; “The Clouds Will Tell” – Nhà Sàn Collective, Hanoi – 2014; “Five Years” – Hanoi Link, Hanoi – 2012; “X second” – Goethe-Institut, Hanoi – 2010. In 2017, he founded Ga Mộc studio, dedicated to experimenting with and developing furniture from dyed plywood, in a minimalist, versatile, and colorful design language. Holding a strict stance on material selection as a personal manifesto, Ban Ga aims to ease the pressure on natural forests, which continue to be overexploited and poorly regulated. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Enquire related what's going on at Manzi 23 See more October 16, 2026 dư cảnh | ripples of the day See more September 29, 2026 muộn màng | delay See more July 24, 2026 chủ nhật, mùa hè | a sunday in summer See more June 21, 2026 Trò chuyện cùng | Talk with MM Lab See more May 29, 2026 một trưng bày | a display by MM Lab See more May 22, 2026 phía sau trang sách | Tour & Thảo luận cùng Nguyễn Huyền Trang See more May 9, 2026 phía sau trang sách | Tour & Thảo luận cùng Nguyễn Huyền Trang See more May 2, 2026 Mở sách | Unfolding See more April 22, 2026 Thanh âm mấy thuở | Reimagined See more March 27, 2026

Nguyễn Ngọc Linhselected works by 𝐍𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐞̂̃𝐧 𝐍𝐠𝐨̣𝐜 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐡 23 - November 15, 2026 October 16, 2026 Nguyễn Ngọc Linh In the well-known, recorded Gsell-Rodin conversations of 1911, art critic Paul Gsell summarized the master sculptor Auguste Rodin's theory of the expressiveness of the human image: “Generally the face alone is considered to be the mirror of the soul: the mobility of the features of the face seems to us the unique exteriorization of the spiritual life. In reality, there is not one muscle of the body that does not express variations within. Each speaks of joy or sadness, enthusiasm or despair, calm or rage. Outstretched arms, an unrestrained torso can smile with as much sweetness as eyes or lips.” - Art: Conversations With Paul Gsell. Translated by deCaso J, Sanders PB. Berkeley, CA, University of California Press, 1984, p. 10. That is to speak of the language of sculpture, with its own advantages in recreating the human form in three dimensions. But without volume to touch, with only line and mass on a flat surface, how far can the body figure be traced back to the roots of expression, and how uncompromisingly? For ten years, one artist has pursued self-directed study to reach the understanding of the very core of the human body, tracing the structure of bone and muscle all the way down, and in doing so, he established his own independent practice path: dedicated entirely to the discipline of artistic anatomy. This autumn, Manzi is honored to present “23,” the first gathering of Nguyễn Ngọc Linh’s paintings alongside personal archives and notes. The showcase marks his decade-long journey from a self-taught student to a lecturer and independent artist. 𝟐𝟑 – 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐍𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐞̂̃𝐧 𝐍𝐠𝐨̣𝐜 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐡 Manzi Art Space | 14 Phan Huy Ích, Ba Đình, Hanoi ️ Opening party: 06.00 PM Friday 16 October On display: 08.00 AM - 07.00 PM | 17 October - 15 November Free admission Other events, including an artist talk and workshop, will take place along the display. Further details will be announced soon. ARTWORKS GALLERY It is appropriate to begin at the origin of it all: Anatomie Artistique by Paul Richer (1849–1933), professor of artistic anatomy at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The book, first published in 1889, is recognized as one of the classic works on anatomy for the plastic arts and was used as a reference by many famous artists, including Renoir, Degas, and Braque. Linh discovered the book by chance while studying in France, and for the next three years, it followed him on a rigorous but productive route of self-teaching, in which “copying bones” was one of the foundational steps. He started by replicating the book page by page, painstakingly tracing each bone structure with a ballpoint pen (which cannot be erased or fixed), forcing the painter to examine closely and calculate proportions precisely before drawing a line. Recording the entire book by hand created a mental "map" that helped him remember the technical terms, muscle attachment points, and fixed landmarks of the skeleton; at the same time, his hand gradually developed muscle memory for drawing a single continuous line. However, a book's 2D flat surface has limitations: it might mislead the student by confining only one point of view in the absence of a three-dimensional reference. Once again, fortune turned mysteriously in Linh's favor: as an art student, he began to be admitted to the Strasbourg Institute of Anatomy. There he worked as meticulously as any medical student, testing what he had learned in the book against real bones and specimens, looking from different angles, and rotating the joints to understand the protrusions, hollows, and deep grooves where the muscle bundles attach. Based on theory collected from the book and the hands-on experience gained on learning with cadavers, Linh systematized his understanding of anatomy by geometrizing bones into basic volumetric structures (cubes, cylinders, and flat planes), stripping away unnecessary details to highlight the core structure while maintaining anatomical accuracy. Linh's personal archive, which includes three volumes on exhibit at "23" (anatomical examinations of the skull, foot, and lower leg), is only a small portion of his extensive self-directed research. Based on such a logical and detailed formula, Linh developed a style of his own, disciplined and meticulous: a single, unbroken line, with no erasure or correction. Rather than building depth through perspective or layered space, he concentrates on the accuracy of every detail and every part of his figures’ bodies, in varying poses and angles. Most of the works are monochrome, with color reduced to a minimum, and nothing in them is abstract: every element has a clear, definite form. Each drawing is an act of distillation: rather than copying from direct observation, he draws on his subconscious and imagination to compose an object on a two-dimensional surface. That object cannot be placed just anywhere. It must hold a fixed position and a coherent relationship to the whole, in proportion, angle, length, and pose. Get one parameter wrong, and the whole drawing loses its reasons and purposes. Ironically, although he has no intention of imposing a specific story or constructing another universe, Linh unconsciously allows us to glimpse the underlying bubbles of narrative and personal obsession; suppressed as they are, they nonetheless smolder beneath, preparing to explode and pop up on the surface. The twenty-three drawings are rich in poses and various in perspectives, yet the backgrounds are almost totally blank. Every subject, whether a realistically rendered body or a fictional hybrid creature, seems confined to no clear backdrop or context but is instead enveloped in its own mystery. They appear fragmentary and detached from one another, yet they all have the same air of indeterminacy, and they are clearly no longer the psychophysiological unit of any specific individual. Rather, the human figure, Linh's constant subject, slowly sheds its individuality and becomes a single anonymous BODY, stripped bare and unnamed. It is carried on a current that runs between ecstasy and agony and that washes away the particulars of each life as it moves toward the one ending all share: death. The body is the physical condition of every living being: we live in it, declare to own it, yet depend on it completely. It is the first thing we are given to enter the world and also the last thing for us to let go. It is a finely balanced work of nature, yet however thoroughly we study this machine, a time will come when we are helpless before it; the body remains a limit we must always yield to and can never escape. Knowing this leaves us caught between two feelings: pride in a structure so exquisite and so aware of its own power, and sorrow at the fragility of mortal flesh. The BODY, in the end, is a paradox, being bound and boundless at once. Linh’s drawings carry, almost without his meaning them to, a quiet revolt against its finitude, against the old sentence of aging, illness, and death. That the revolt must fail does not diminish the body’s worth. If anything, it makes the brief festival the body is entitled to, and which life allows it occasionally, all the more worth celebrating. Life, and every living being that has ever existed or vanished, is the product of evolution: the sum of countless marvelous coincidences. Every human being begins from 23 pairs of chromosomes; the Earth’s axis tilts by roughly 23.5 degrees, just enough to bring about the succession of seasons, the foundation of life; blood takes an average of about 23 seconds to complete one circuit of the human body... The number 23 recurs with uncanny persistence in biology, mathematics, history, religion, mythology, and beyond, to the point of becoming a phenomenon of popular culture with a name of its own: the “23 Enigma.” Is there a great truth behind it all, or is it merely the result of our habit of seeking patterns among random data, together with confirmation bias in the human mind? Either way, Linh bears the imprint of coincidences of his own. From the old bookshop to the door of the Institute of Anatomy, random threads, knotted together, led him to this path. Fate, or just a story we tell afterward? It is hard to say. What is certain is that, like a pen line once set down on paper, it cannot be erased; that chain of chance events, after much uncertainty of his adolescent years, drew itself into a clear path, and Linh is walking it still and will keep walking it, as he draws: patiently, in one continuous, decisive line. _______ OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s)

oil/acrylic Đinh Thị Thắm Poong biography Born in 1970 in a Muong minority family, Dinh Thi Tham Poong went on to study at the Hanoi Fine Arts College and graduated in 1993. Poong combines images from her own Muong heritage with a surrealist visual landscape imbuing her canvases – both formally and emotionally - with quality which can be described as utterly unique and completely global. Pure flights of the imagination fuse with concrete details from daily life creating canvases that work and play in the ethereal landscape of the mind. Utilizing a pattern uponpatterninaflat palette of color on traditional Dzo paper, the artist creates a world at once introspective and surrealistic. Depictions of ethnic minorities juxtaposed with flat decorative pattern are flights of imagination fused with normal daily life, they are but one destination point in this versatile artist's work. Tham Poong’s works are held in the collections of the Singapore Art Museum, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works The covenant of illusion ĐINH THỊ THẮM POONG 2020 59 x 77 cm mixed media on dzo paper Enquire works The underside of the accord (diptych paintings) no. 02 ĐINH THỊ THẮM POONG 2014 77 x 107 cm mixed media on dzo paper Enquire works The underside of the accord (diptych paintings) no. 01 ĐINH THỊ THẮM POONG 2018 73 x 103 cm mixed media on dzo paper Enquire related what's going on at Manzi dư cảnh | ripples of the day See more September 29, 2026 muộn màng | delay See more July 24, 2026 chủ nhật, mùa hè | a sunday in summer See more June 21, 2026 Trò chuyện cùng | Talk with MM Lab See more May 29, 2026 một trưng bày | a display by MM Lab See more May 22, 2026 phía sau trang sách | Tour & Thảo luận cùng Nguyễn Huyền Trang See more May 9, 2026 phía sau trang sách | Tour & Thảo luận cùng Nguyễn Huyền Trang See more May 2, 2026 Mở sách | Unfolding See more April 22, 2026 Thanh âm mấy thuở | Reimagined See more March 27, 2026 My Zootopia | Zootopia của tôi See more December 28, 2025

  • Nguyễn Thị Hoàng Minh

silk Nguyễn Thị Hoàng Minh biography Born in 1984 in Saigon, graduated from Ho Chi Minh University of Fine Arts with a master degree in Visual Arts in 2016, Nguyễn Thị Hoàng Minh is considered one of the most potential artists with great talent in Vietnam. Choosing silk as the main medium, Minh's artworks focus on shapes and colors with a desire to show the intimate relationship between human and nature as well as the beautiful cohesion between an individual with his/her surrounding entities. The characters in Minh's paintings always bear the breath of time, they are emotional, innocents and sometimes almost fragile. • Nguyễn Minh Thành

lacquer Nguyễn Minh Thành biography Born in 1971 in Hanoi, Minh Thanh graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1996. He belongs to the first generation of Vietnamese avant-garde artists who experimented with the less traditional methods of art-making such as performance and installation in the 1990s and 2000s, and later played an influential role in nurturing and shaping the subsequent development of contemporary and experimental art in Hanoi. Intrigued by Buddhist concerns of attachment and escape, and using mainly Chinese ink and watercolour on handmade Vietnamese dzo paper, Thanh’s melancholic portraits are the results of his meditative and spiritual search for beauty, harmony and tranquility. Having been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, Thanh’s work is included in numerous public and private collections, such as the National Art Gallery of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, the World Bank Art Program, and the Post Vi Dai Collection of Contemporary Vietnamese Art. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Untitled NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2012 100 x 100 cm lacquer Enquire works Still Life NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2012 44 x 26.5 cm gouache on dzo paper Enquire works Lotus NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2011 60 x 120 cm gouache on dzo paper Enquire works Halfblood NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2011 250 x 150 cm watercolor and gouache on handmade dzo paper Enquire works Still Life NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2012 70.5 x 50 cm gouache on dzo paper Enquire works Intelligent Hole NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2017 79 x 59 cm watercolor and gouache on handmade dzo paper Enquire works Landscape 3 NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2018 30 x 20 cm gouache on dzo paper Enquire works To be one NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2022 60 x 120 cm gouache and watercolor on hand-made dzo paper, pasted on canvas Enquire works Random waves of melancholy NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2011 120 x 80 cm gouache on dzo paper Enquire works Portrait no. 2 NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2021 40 x 60 cm gouache on dzo paper Enquire works The horizontal siesta NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2012 71.5 x 20 cm ink, gouache on dzo paper Enquire works Roses NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2019 80 x 60 cm watercolor on silk Enquire works Timeless NGUYỄN MINH THÀNH 2017 79 x 59 cm watercolor, gouache on handmade dzo paper Enquire related what's going on at Manzi dư cảnh | ripples of the day See more September 29, 2026 muộn màng | delay See more July 24, 2026 chủ nhật, mùa hè | a sunday in summer See more June 21, 2026 Trò chuyện cùng | Talk with MM Lab See more May 29, 2026 một trưng bày | a display by MM Lab See more May 22, 2026 phía sau trang sách | Tour & Thảo luận cùng Nguyễn Huyền Trang See more May 9, 2026 phía sau trang sách | Tour & Thảo luận cùng Nguyễn Huyền Trang See more May 2, 2026 Mở sách | Unfolding See more April 22, 2026 Thanh âm mấy thuở | Reimagined See more March 27, 2026 My Zootopia | Zootopia của tôi See more December 28, 2025
