  • Ly Hoàng Ly

Ly Hoàng Ly biography Ly Hoàng Ly is a multidisciplinary artist working across poetry, painting, video, performance art, installation and public art. Ly graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts in 1999, received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2011 and earned her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), majoring in Sculpture in 2013. She spent a year from 2013 to 2014 interning at the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (JFABC, SAIC). Ly is the first female visual artist in Vietnam doing performance art and poetry performance. Her installations incorporate a level of performance or activation between subjects and objects that unlock sensual affects in the human-materiality nexus. Ly’s previous works make bodily references to women’s cultural experiences of maternity and ministrations as well as highlight human emotions and our relationship to place and nature. Since 2011, Ly has explored the relationship of freedom and surveillance, inherited trauma, the ephemeral materiality of memory, the dislocation and the importance of community and human connection, the association of the loss of nature and human mortality. Her art raises questions about the general human conditions, the critical states of society, and our shared issues of migration and immigration. It speaks not only on a personal level, but also on a global scale: of (mis)understandings and (mis)placement, of (trans)forming identity and being rootless, of adaptation and acceptance, of division and union, and of being human. Ly Hoàng Ly has exhibited widely in and outside of Vietnam such as ‘The 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT9)’ at Queensland Art Gallery /Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia (2018); ‘APT Selection’ at Centro Cultural La Moneda, Santiago, Chile (2019); ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’ – START 2017 (Saatchi Gallery, London, UK, 2017); ‘Zonas Grises – Grey Zones’ (Museo de Antioquia, Colombia, 2016-2017) In 2017, she open her largest solo exhibition in Vietnam at The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, Ho Chi Minh City. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Ashes no. 22 LY HOÀNG LY 2017 30 x 22 cm digital print on aluminium Enquire related what's going on at Manzi

  • Nguyễn Đình Hoàng Việt

Nguyễn Đình Hoàng Việt biography Born in 1988 in Dac Lac, Viet grew up in Hue and holds a BA in Applied Arts from the Hue University of Fine Arts. Viet is best known for his trompe l’oeil portraits of animals (fish, duck, chicken, crab…) looking peacefully content, trancelike, as if captured by a wonderful dream. Although playfully depicted, the works seriously have us question our eyes, as on closer inspection all the creatures turn out to be dead. His second area of interest is everyday objects – for which he has been producing 2D replicas of things we see and overlook daily with his trademark photorealist precision: broken glass, a bent nail, pieces of paper and a wall crack. However, the obvious and mundane here is made obscure and abstract – not in terms of style but content. Objects perceived to serve a specific function are rendered useless: a painted nail cannot hold a piece of art, a painted crack cannot be fixed, a painted broken piece of glass cannot be swept up. Viet is able to provoke double-edged meanings and interpretations, whilst questioning the role and value of painting. His works are both witty and thoughtful, lighthearted and destructive. His recent notable exhibitions included: “The Language of the Images”: Hungarian – Vietnamese Contemporary Painting Exhibition – Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi & HCMC Fine Arts Museum, Ho Chi Minh city – 2018; ‘?!’ – Solo Exhibition at Manzi Art Space, Hanoi - 2016 works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Abandoned house 2 NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on photograph Enquire works Giant freshwater prawn NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on paper Enquire works Contented NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 38.5 x 38.5 cm oil and newspaper on canvas Enquire works Sumo NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 100 x 71 cm oil and newspaper on canvas Enquire works Two Fish NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2020 36 x 27 cm oil on paper Enquire works Drift NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2018 21 x 16.5 cm oil, pen, pencil on paper Enquire works Abandoned house 1 NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on photograph Enquire works The Fish NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 30 x 42 cm oil on paper Enquire works Escape NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on paper Enquire works Come in NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on paper Enquire works Summer NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2019 12 x 17 cm oil on paper Enquire related what's going on at Manzi

  • Lãng Đỗ

Lãng Đỗ biography Born in 1986, Do Thanh Lang received his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Ho Chi Minh University of Fine Art in 2011. The fact of belonging to the generation of young Vietnamese born at the turn of Đổi Mới and coming of age into a brave new open-market economy, has impressed itself on Lang’s artistic practices, particularly his featured themes of freedom and transgression. Drenched in blazes of bold shapes and colors, Lang’s paintings involve faceless figures and hypnagogic settings evocative of Italian giallo films. The situations and actions depicted range from being unsettling to downright grotesque, their significance not immediately obvious. However, such ambiguity at play throughout openly invites viewers to weave individualities into these psychedelic backdrops, at the same time hints at the inevitability of universal history repeating itself. Lang states, “Practicing art is an excitement. There is always spontaneity, accidents and elements of surprise that go beyond my imagination. Emotion is a necessity to an artist. It needs to be captured and flourished. An uncontrollable burst of energy is always my creative premise. Ideas and images will eventually take place. Painting remains as a mysterious language, full of energy, and has profound content and philosophy” works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Hard-boiled wonderland LÃNG ĐỖ 2021 20 x 20 cm acrylic on F.O panel Enquire works Wanted to tease girl bathing in a stream, boys encountered a gangster sister LÃNG ĐỖ 2016 42 x 42 cm acrylic on pp paper Enquire related what's going on at Manzi

  • One Planet

One Planet - July 28, 2013 July 6, 2013 Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng A collaboration of manzi art space with Galerie Quynh (HCMC), 'One Planet' is a solo exhibiton by visual artist Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng - one of the most important young artists in Vietnam. ‘One Planet’ features Hùng's new sculptural installations which was on show in Ho Chi Minh City early this year and a series of his paintings that the artist himself refers to as 'Mauvais Gout' (‘bad taste') entitled ‘We’ve been here’. Drawing from his own personal history growing up in a cramped Soviet style apartment block in Hanoi, Hùng reflects on the idea of community, the conflicts that exist within and without constructed societies, and the complexities of civic development and individual responsibility. How is a community defined? Is the traditional idea of community just hollow rhetoric or an ideal that can evolve and adapt to modern day Vietnam? Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng confronts these issues with his trademark irony and humor highlighting the oftentimes absurdity of human behavior and endeavor. • I will come to see you with a visual story

I will come to see you with a visual story - March 23, 2014 March 19, 2014 Trần Trọng Vũ Images and languages are used as tools for human expression. They both are often being put together and sometime act as integral part of each other in order to bring multi-meanings & answers for an object. Read the images and see the words, write a picture and draw and essay – we can call these the jobs of both art-makers and art-enjoyers. Read the images with words might be a fascinating way to break away from the images. Search for images in words can also be a nice suggestion to go beyond the words. ‘I will come to see you with a visual story’ will show to the audience the first part of Trần Trọng Vũ’s new art project, in which language and visual aspect are results of a series of extraordinary facts. This visit will also introduce other artworks of the project under the possible forms of litrature and visual art. ARTWORKS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s)
