- SCRY
Nguyễn Phi Phi OanhA solo exhibition by PHI PHI OANH 16.12.2016 - 16.01.2017 SCRY - January 16, 2017 December 16, 2016 Nguyễn Phi Phi Oanh SCRY features Phi Phi Oanh's latest series of lacquer paintings on glasses which she has worked and experimented on for years. Scrying is the act of divination through focused gazing into a glass or reflective medium. In this exhibition, magnifying glasses are used to view the lacquer skins. The title, Scry, suggests the character of the images presented as embracing of ambiguity and visual magic and that they are desperate attempts to grasp what the future beholds. For this series of paintings, the dimensions of the skins emulate that of a touch tablet screen. Using this visual trope, through lacquer painting, the artist loosely reflects on contemporary imagery—that which new technologies such as drones, digital, satellite, nanotechnology can visualize. They too are a kind of looking glass through which we can grasp our surrounding and material world. The magnifying glasses augment the illusion of magic in lacquer painting while simultaneously giving away its means of construction. The skins are back lit and front lit to optimize the pure qualities of the lacquer painting that one would not be able to see on another surface. ARTWORKS GALLERY It seems almost anachronistic today to talk about medium in the context of contemporary arts and painting. However, to me this substance Sơn Ta is much more than an image-making medium. It is a cultural medium that has embodied all of the major dialectical changes in Vietnamese society through the changes in its forms and usage. As painting, tranh sơn mài is part of a history of otherness. Since its invention as painting in Vietnam, it has also constituted a political media embedded within its use issues of identity, national essence and patriotism. In the era of globalization and virtual reality, the use of sơn ta is my own way of negotiating between the extremes of global homogenization and territorial localism. Using lacquer, I hope to broaden the scope of interpretation of this medium and create works that contribute in a heightened way to our experience with seeing and vision. If the qualities of territorial specificity, materiality, uniqueness and environment hold any meaning today, they can be explored in this substance. - Phi Phi Oanh OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s) Nguyễn Phi Phi Oanh

- Land of Leisure
Lê Phi LongA solo exhibition by LÊ PHI LONG 27.10 - 21.11.2019 Land of Leisure - November 21, 2019 October 27, 2019 Lê Phi Long “If hunting is a symbol of colonial domination or recurring subjugation, then doubtfulness or irony shall counteract that domination.” – Excerpt from Nguyen Phan Long in “L’Echo Annamite”. ‘Land of Leisure’ – the first solo exhibition by Le Phi Long, one of the most promising visual artists of Vietnam. This is part of Le Phi Long's research project on Indochina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Taking place at both of Manzi’s spaces, the exhibition features a site-specific installation and a series of paintings created from old archival photos and drawings of wildlife hunting activities in Da Lat during the colonial period. The site-specific installation ‘DALAT’ (Dat Aliis Laetitiam Aliis Temperiem) combines a recording of hoof beats and a single-channel video depicting sunbeams in the forest shifting on the floor of the art space. The sunbeams cast the shadow of a pine forest on the room’s gold-coated surfaces, transporting viewers back to Indochina during the early 20th Century, when the European ideology made its way to a new land in the East. In contrast to the installation, the paintings and illustrations in Le Phi Long's series ‘Hunting as a metaphor for politics’( *) were created in black ink, without backgrounds, on white paper scattered with gold leaves. Through the actions of compounding, recreating, cutting, pasting and smearing these images, Le Phi Long is searching for a way to convert layers of meaning, and to create a reflection of the city of Da Lat. (*)The title is taken from the book 'Imperial Heights' by Eric T. Jennings. This is part of Manzi Art Programme supported by the Goethe Institut. - Smile! Temporary Art
Plonk & Replonk.A show by PLONK & REPLONK 26.03 - 26.04.2015 Smile! Temporary Art - April 26, 2015 March 26, 2015 Plonk & Replonk. As a collaboration of manzi art space with L’Espace Hanoi, the exhibition 'Smile! Temporary Art' presents the weird and wonderful world of Plonk & Replonk. Well-known in both their place of birth Switzerland and neighboring country France as Plonk & Replonk, the artist duo/brothers Hubert Froidevaux (b. 1966) and Jacques Froidevaux (b. 1963) explore the endless possible uses of humour in various art forms: object, sculpture, installation, light box, postcard, graphic print etc. Characterized by a mix of black humour and wicked wit, which borders on the sarcastic and mischievous, Plonk & Replonk deal with worldwide relevant topics such as environment, globalization, education and consumerism with both criticality and lightheartedness, making their work brutally honest yet playful and fantastical. By turning ordinary objects, habits and events upside-down and inside-out, Plonk & Replonk ask us to see reality in other ways. Or rather, they invite us in for a not-your-usual exhibition, a never-ending laughter work-out, and a hard-to-find chance to at least, for once, let ourselves loose and laugh at art. sculpture Thái Nhật Minh biography Born in 1984 in Vinh Phuc, Thai Nhat Minh graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 2009, and went on to obtain his Master degree in 2012. Minh began his career as a sculptor during his university years, and until now he has had almost 10 years of artistic experience. His works examine the fundamental aspects of form-making and focus on the process of simplification; details are often replaced by suggestive shapes and blank surface. Not relying heavily on the content, Minh rather seeks for new ways to find the connection between form, space and material in his works. Thai Nhat Minh had four solo exhibitions in Hanoi: ‘Seeds’ – Dong Phong gallery – 2016; ‘Soldier – Soldier’s Wife’ - Vietnam Museum of Fin – 2016; ‘Breeding Season’ - Manzi Art Space – 2014 and ‘The birds’ - Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts – 2013. - Stories told in an Oriental way
Đỗ Tuấn AnhA solo exhibition by ĐỖ TUẤN ANH 29.05 - 20.06.2015 Stories told in an Oriental way - June 20, 2015 May 29, 2015 Đỗ Tuấn Anh The exhibition features Tuan Anh’s latest surreal paintings which were created in 2015, two years after his settlement in Solingen, a small city in Germany. In Tuan Anh’s previous works, the countryside has been the spiritual foundation which forms the basis of his practice, dominating his perception and approach to art-making. Having to relocate to Germany in 2013 means that the artist has been uprooted from his source of inspiration, leaving him in an in-between state, neither here nor there. And this uncertainty is reflected strongly in his solo show at Manzi. Combining contradictory conditions of dream and reality, in this series of work, Do Tuan Anh painted unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision and created strange creatures with everyday objects. By showing his quirky side, pairing up people and animals with wit and irony, the artist is telling a surrealist tale in an oriental way. silk Nguyễn Trang Ngà biography Graduating from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1997 and receiving a Master's degree in Painting in 2006, Nguyen Trang Nga is known as one of the most outstanding silk painters nowadays in Vietnam. Throughout 20 years of diligently practicing in silk painting, consistent with the Asian figurative and composition, Trang Nga has built her own characteristic style: delicate feminine yet full of dynamic dominant traits, especially her choice of colors - vivid hues juxtaposed with the sombre shades. Her paintings, mostly still life, captured a frozen moment of fleeting time and invisible whispers of the nature. Flowers and plants take a center stage in Trang Nga’s works, presented with all kinds of nuances: sometimes shy and timid as of the first buds of a season, sometimes glowing, gorgeous as the flowers in full bloom, otherwise decayed, withered as if suffered from ill-treat of the mist and the wind. Either joyful or gloomy, exuberant or sorrowful, the flowers of Trang Nga mesmerized the viewers with their own melancholic beauty, though pure, sweet and poetic, they are softly humming the rhythm of death and cycle of life. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Clouds sauntering, Breeze fluttering NGUYỄN TRANG NGÀ 2024 61 x 61 cm watercolor on silk Enquire works The window at the side of Tuyền Lâm lake NGUYỄN TRANG NGÀ 2019 40 x 40 cm watercolor on silk Enquire works Still Life NGUYỄN TRANG NGÀ 2024 40 x 80 cm watercolor on silk Enquire related Catching Faces Faint Traces the sky, the sand, the lashing waves following the stone wall and we found an electric generator 6𝒗➡️¹/² The world as a draft The Fifth Cardinal Direction Spatium 47 Days, Sound-less in spaces of everyscape, at time without end </3 Hồi Sóng Birdsong on our pathway vol. 4 Entrusted Conjectures Hanoi 1985 - 2015, In The Years Of Forgetting Then and Now, Hanoi streets in transition 'Neo-Romanticism' More than Human #1 Arca Noa no-think The Four Subjects A saga of unrealised projects The dreamer: heterotopia, tabula rasa, noble silence (a part of ongoing project 0395A.ĐC) Through the looking glass what's going on at Manzi Tình See more October 5, 2025 Tình See more October 4, 2025 Bắt mặt | Catching Faces See more October 4, 2025 Tình See more October 3, 2025 Artist Talk vs Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai See more September 27, 2025 Art Tour | Những Vệt Mờ / Faint Traces See more September 10, 2025 Những Vệt Mờ | Faint Traces See more September 6, 2025 Between the Strings See more August 5, 2025 sóng vỗ cát trời | the sky, the sand, the lashing waves See more August 1, 2025 Nguyên (âm) đơn See more July 20, 2025
