Nguyễn Uyên Minh Nguyễn Vương Phương Thảo Cao Hoàng LongOpening act of 'Saigon Invasion' 29.10 - 02.11.2016 NET-KID show /nākid/ - November 2, 2016 October 29, 2016 Nguyễn Uyên Minh Nguyễn Vương Phương Thảo Cao Hoàng Long Coming from the land of sun and rain, NET-KID show which was officially launched at Ga0-Zerostation (Ho Chi Minh City) in early 2016, “hijack” Manzi for a week as the opening act for our initiative “Saigon Invasion” - a series of presentations aiming to showcase the creative landscape of Ho Chi Minh City through the lenses and practices of Saigon-based art collectives. NET-KID is not just an art exhibition nor performance. NET-KID is about having a good time, and creating a space for people to strip off their identities and enjoy the now. NET-KID is mischievously mispronounced from "naked", and embodies the wild and free spirits of the enfants rebelles of the art world. Two emerging Saigon-based photographers Nguyễn Uyên Minh and Nguyễn Vương Phương Thảo (Thảo.intherain) will lead you into their worlds, and use the camera to capture you at your barest, both physically and emotionally. Two separate installation art pieces/studio spaces will be set up, and you are welcome to come join, get drunk and "strip it all off" with the artists. Additionally, “Saturn at your feet” - a site-specific light installation by Cao Hoàng Long, in collaboration with Uyên Minh and Phương, will let you discover another dimension of NET-KID’s cosmic love. Come, bare (feet) it all, enjoy the stars and the sky with us! “We - as those who seek an escape from ourselves - seek not a narrative from you. In return, hopefully, you too won’t have any fixed conception or expectations from us. Let go of your body and mind, and become a part of the now.” - NET-KID Artists: Nguyễn Uyên Minh, Nguyễn Vương Phương Thảo, Cao Hoàng Long Curator: Xuân Hà Assistant curator: Thanh (Nu) Mai Producer: Đăng Bùi *This event is part of Manzi’s art programme supported by CDEF of the Danish Embassy ARTWORKS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s)

Nguyễn Trần Nama solo show by Nguyễn Trần Nam Through the looking glass - April 9, 2022 March 16, 2022 Nguyễn Trần Nam Known as one of Hanoi’s second wave of contemporary artists, Nam’s practice embraces a diverse body of multimedia works such as paintings, installations and video art. ‘Through the looking glass’ is the artist’s third solo exhibition with Manzi, following ‘Undone’ in 2017 and 'The broken chapters' in 2013. Consisting of a stop motion film, a few sketches and a series of found objects, the exhibition questions the relationship between human belief, power and violence, and between loss and oblivion. In the works on display at Manzi, the film – the only moving element of the exhibition – is composed of pure fantasies and unreal chronicles, like an aimless journey through an unknown tunnel with various exits, leaving us disoriented in the shattered imagery and incongruous juxtaposition of faith and violence, a phantasmagoric hybrid between ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and Dante's ‘Inferno’. In here and out there, or out here and in over there. The hand drawn pictures – frozen moments – have now been endowed with movement through a stop motion technique and have come to life in the form of an animation which is ultimately just another kind of freezing over. The other parts of the exhibition feature left-over elements that were used in constructing the film and its motions. Paper sheets reveal the figures and traces of the drawing process; Bone fragments collected by chance around the walls of Huế Citadel now turn into a poem arranged with the dense areas and white spaces of a written composition or a painting; evoking undeciphered ancient writings, the poem seems to be whispering the lost tales of extinct civilizations; The Landolt C chart, developed by the Swiss-born ophthalmologist Edmund Landolt for vision testing, can readily be found in any ophthalmology clinic in Vietnam; The Katuk plant blends the artist’s own memories of his childhood garden with Andersen’s fairy tales ‘The Rose Elf’ and ‘Under the Willow tree’; Soil and sickles are found objects from the artist’s hometown, intimately associated with personal loss – soil collected on a field that the artist has never cultivated and sickles that are just blades without handles that have never been used. Side by side, these two elements are reflections of each other in different dimensions. Creating a parallel world unbound by truth, time or place, ‘Through the looking glass’ can be seen as a change in Nguyễn Trần Nam’s artistic practice, leading to a new phase in his creative path. The show will commence on 16 March and will be on display until 09 April 2022. Notes for visitors: Due to the fragility of the installation and the complexity of the set up, we can only accommodate max 10 persons for each slot. In light of the current coronavirus developments, please wear mask when visiting, scan QR code and use the hand sanitizer provided at our door. silk Lê Thúy biography Born in 1988 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, and graduated from both the Thanh Hoa Art and Culture College and the Vietnam Fine Art University, Le Thuy has established herself as an emerging artist since 2012 when she became the winner of the Art Council Award for her “Mơ” (“Dream”) installation in the competition Students are Arts, Vietnam Fine Art University. Four years later, Le Thuy is one of three winners of Young Talent Programme for 2016/17, organized by ION Art Gallery and the Affordable Art Fair Singapore. Being passionate about silk – the traditional typical material of Eastern Area, Le Thuy has chosen silk painting as one of the main part of her creative practices. “Silk is smooth but weaved with extremely tight silk fibers, just like connections among individuals in a society. I exploit the transparent aspects of silk to create the feeling of longing, mystery, and obsession. Viewers can focus on the image on the surface of the silk, or also see through the silk to what is behind the silk, to create tension that reflects my own obsessions.” Captivated by concepts of place and space, beauty in life and death, Le Thuy raises thought provoking questions in her works: “where is a place of peace? - an uninhabited world? or a world of death? Le Thuy’s works are included in various local and international collections such as the Dogma Collection in Saigon, Vietnam and Elegant Team Development Collection in HongKong. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Revisit Hoan Kiem Lake LÊ THÚY 2021 40 x 30 cm watercolor on silk Enquire related Catching Faces Faint Traces the sky, the sand, the lashing waves following the stone wall and we found an electric generator 6𝒗➡️¹/² The world as a draft The Fifth Cardinal Direction Spatium 47 Days, Sound-less in spaces of everyscape, at time without end </3 Hồi Sóng Birdsong on our pathway vol. 4 Entrusted Conjectures Hanoi 1985 - 2015, In The Years Of Forgetting Then and Now, Hanoi streets in transition 'Neo-Romanticism' More than Human #1 Arca Noa no-think The Four Subjects A saga of unrealised projects The dreamer: heterotopia, tabula rasa, noble silence (a part of ongoing project 0395A.ĐC) Through the looking glass what's going on at Manzi Tình See more October 5, 2025 Tình See more October 4, 2025 Bắt mặt | Catching Faces See more October 4, 2025 Tình See more October 3, 2025 Artist Talk vs Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai See more September 27, 2025 Art Tour | Những Vệt Mờ / Faint Traces See more September 10, 2025 Những Vệt Mờ | Faint Traces See more September 6, 2025 Between the Strings See more August 5, 2025 sóng vỗ cát trời | the sky, the sand, the lashing waves See more August 1, 2025 Nguyên (âm) đơn See more July 20, 2025
- Lãng Đỗ
oil/acrylic Lãng Đỗ biography Born in 1986, Do Thanh Lang received his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Ho Chi Minh University of Fine Art in 2011. The fact of belonging to the generation of young Vietnamese born at the turn of Đổi Mới and coming of age into a brave new open-market economy, has impressed itself on Lang’s artistic practices, particularly his featured themes of freedom and transgression. Approaching art practice with a rare instinct — visible through the craggy edges of his canvases, or the occasional insect fossilized by his resin pour — Do Thanh Lang is aptly positioned to extract lightness from a dire situation. Drenched in blazes of bold shapes and colors, Lang’s paintings involve faceless figures and hypnagogic settings evocative of Italian giallo films. The situations and actions depicted range from being unsettling to downright grotesque, while the ambiguity at play throughout openly invites viewers to weave individualities into these psychedelic backdrops and at the same time hints at the inevitability of universal history repeating itself. In all their hazy strangeness, his artworks are akin to pieces of a memory — a visual journal of altered consciousness. His work has been exhibited in numerous group shows in Vietnam and across the region, including Displacement (Gallery Rhim, Seoul); Salt of the Forest (Korea Foundation Gallery, Seoul & CUC Gallery, Vietnam Women's Museum, Hanoi); Modern Wind (Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association); My Sister (Sàn Art, HCMC); Fall (Cafe Trầm, HCMC); Falling from the Sky (Sao La, HCMC); March: Art Walk (various venues, HCMC); and the series mù dạ quang , Dăm Kết Mặt Trăng , Bồi Tích , Cicada Song in a Summer of Poppies , Lò Cò , and NGUCHONOBAY (curated by Sao La) at Galerie Quynh, HCMC. He also participated in Spot Art Singapore 2014 (ARTrium @ MCI, Singapore) and the Brownian Motion artist residency at Heritage Space, Hanoi. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Hard-boiled wonderland LÃNG ĐỖ 2021 20 x 20 cm acrylic on F.O panel Enquire related Catching Faces Faint Traces the sky, the sand, the lashing waves following the stone wall and we found an electric generator 6𝒗➡️¹/² The world as a draft The Fifth Cardinal Direction Spatium 47 Days, Sound-less in spaces of everyscape, at time without end </3 Hồi Sóng Birdsong on our pathway vol.
- The world as a draft
Đỗ Thanh Lãng, Nguyễn Đức Đạta display by Do Thanh Lang & Nguyen Duc Dat The world as a draft - April 13, 2025 March 14, 2025 Đỗ Thanh Lãng, Nguyễn Đức Đạt In collaboration with Galerie Quynh (based in Ho Chi Minh City), Manzi Art Space is pleased to present ‘𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑 𝑎𝑠 𝑎 𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑓𝑡’ - a display of new work by 𝗗𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗵 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴 and 𝗡𝗴𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝘂𝗰 𝗗𝗮𝘁, two seminal members of the art collective 𝗦𝗮𝗼 𝗟𝗮 (*) Featuring the duo’s new paintings which were first exhibited last year at Galerie Quynh, this version for Hanoi will unfold a new presentation with alterations and compromises to adapt into a different space. Rather than just a replicated display to reach new audiences, or merely a shift in physical location, ‘𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑 𝑎𝑠 𝑎 𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑓𝑡’ at Manzi, on the other hand, is a daunting diversion, a swing to keep up the spirit of scrappy improvisation and the spontaneous energy that inspired Sao La Collective's founding. Simply tear up the old draft, erase all the labels of ‘what has been/supposed to be’ in order to freely dream about ‘what can be’ and explore and embrace ‘what is not seen’... THE WORLD AS A DRAFT A display by Do Thanh Lang & Nguyen Duc Dat ➖ Opening: 6.30 Friday night 14 March 2025 ➖ On display: 11.00 AM - 07.00 PM (Tue-Sun) from 15 March until 13 April 2025 📍 Manzi Exhibition Space, No. 2 Ngõ Hàng Bún Free Entrance Do’s paintings take us to ambiguous places inhabited by anonymous characters often engaged in some sort of absurdity; sometimes violent or disturbing acts of transgression play out. Seemingly playful scenes unfold against a backdrop of bright colors and shiny surfaces. Do Thanh Lang often finds visual sources from the internet and news media and then transposes the images to imagined (non)locales. The scenes are not as whimsical as they initially seem but are filled with a tension that seeps through the layers of paint and resin. While Do’s paintings communicate a sense of cool detachment, Nguyen Duc Dat’s works are more emotional and visceral. Everyday (offline) life, moments of beauty and strangeness in the world, and global socio-political conflicts are depicted with a rawness that moves between tragicomedy and honest, profound storytelling. ___ (*) Sao La is a non-profit and independent art project/collective in Southern Vietnam, focusing on relationships among artists, community and art itself. As the nature of a "space traveler," not based on a fixed location, Sao La carries two main objectives: making contemporary art accessible to the general Vietnamese public through educational programs and nurturing Vietnam’s growing creative community. The project will serve not only as a project that organizes exhibitions, film and video screenings, workshops and lectures but also as an informal place for Vietnamese artists to experiment, challenge and develop their creative practices. Found only in the Truong Son mountain range of Vietnam and Laos, Sao La is the name of one of the world’s rarest mammals. The word ‘sao’ on its own can signify ‘star’ or pose the questions ‘how?’ ‘what?’ or ‘why?’ ‘La’ suggests a shriek, call or shout. https://saolacollective.weebly.com/ ARTWORKS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s) Nguyễn Đức Đạt Lãng Đỗ
- CONSCIOUSNESS
Trịnh CungA solo exhibition by TRỊNH CUNG 12.01 - 20.01. 2015 CONSCIOUSNESS - January 20, 2015 January 12, 2015 Trịnh Cung ‘Consciousness’ featuring Trinh Cung's latest creations with 9 sketches and 7 large size oil paintings will mark the return of one of the most important artists of Saigon before 1975 after more than 20 years long of absence in the local art scene. ‘I haven’t shown my work to public for a long time as I felt depressed with everything I created, so I wrapped them up, locked them in a tube, brought them along with me with the hope to find a heaven, for me and for them. Now at the age of 77, I have realised that my artwork need to be free, they need to be alive and that’s why they are here, at manzi art space today’ - Trinh Cung. By setting up an ambiguous interplay between foreground and background, transforming his canvas into a composition of loose, organic forms, in this series of work, Trinh Cung has created a perpetual motion, candidly confronting themes of identity, sexuality and the fear of loss and abandonment. - The subtle moves
A group show by students majored in Silk, Painting Faculty of the Vietnam Fine Arts University The subtle moves - May 16, 2021 April 30, 2021 Curated by artist Nguyễn Thế Sơn Manzi Exhibition Space, No.2 Ngõ Hàng Bún alley, Ba Đinh, Hanoi 30 Apr - 16 May (10AM - 7 PM, Tuesday to Sunday) Free Entrance Featuring nearly 30 silk works, which are all composition assignments of art students in their final year of Bachelor’s studies, ‘The Subtle Moves’ introduces to the public the promising representatives of a new artist generation as well as offers the artists themselves essential motivation at their significant turning point. “Silk is inherently fragile and sometimes fairly elusive, thus, hardly becomes the first choice of many Fine Arts students. And even in case of someone who got attracted by this delicate material in the beginning of their art training, this path of practice is eventually not their pursuit after graduation. 'The Subtle Moves' is an effort to showcase latest works by students majored in Silk, Painting Faculty of the Vietnam Fine Arts University. As the teacher and instructor, who had a chance to observe and accompany students in a process of striving to improve/make certain ‘moves’ through each composition module, I understand that every attempt, no matter how trivial the ‘move’ was, had been a real struggle. And for me, such kind of struggle is very valuable, the moves resulting from this process, including both the enhancement of technique/skill and the shifts in thinking and reflection, not only are crucial for personal growth of every creative individual but also should be fundamental philosophy of the training system. These ‘moves’ need to be acknowledged and encouraged so that rather than being limited to the surface only in technical terms of characteristics, features or personal style, this ephemeral medium could go further to provoke thoughts and self-reflections in the audience. ” - Nguyễn Thế Sơn, curator of the show. oil/acrylic Nguyễn Quang Huy biography Born in 1971 in Ha Tay, Huy completed his studies at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1996. He is considered one of the pioneers of Vietnamese experimental and contemporary art. Well-known for his blue, large-scale portraits of women and video installations which are dedicated to the life of the working-class, Huy recently took a more abstract path. The images in his paintings now seem to oscillate between shattered dreams while appearing intriguing and magnificent at the same time. Huy has had solo exhibitions in Vietnam, Germany, France, and Singapore, and participated in numerous international group exhibitions in Japan, the US, Finland, Thailand, China, Australia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. dzo painting Bùi Tiến Tuấn biography Born in 1971 in Quang Nam province, graduated from Ho Chi Minh University of Fine Arts in 1998, Bui Tien Tuan has made a name for himself as one of the best silk painters of Vietnamese contemporary art. Mainly using ink and watercolor on silk or dzo paper and focused on woman portraits, but rather than to conform with standards and patterns of these traditional media and the classic topic, Tuan's works are uniquely striking as powerful, dynamic, yet sophisticated. Depicted in an imaginary world, the characters in his painting are free and self - assertive, disentangled themselves from all banalities of everyday life. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Nocturnal nymphs BÙI TIẾN TUẤN 2022 60 x 80 cm acrylic on dzo paper Enquire works Her BÙI TIẾN TUẤN 2023 125 x 62 cm acrylic on silk Enquire works Thousand cranes BÙI TIẾN TUẤN 2023 60 x 90 cm acrylic on silk Enquire works Three Dancers BÙI TIẾN TUẤN 2012 83 x 135 cm Ink, acrylic on silk Enquire works Muse no.1 BÙI TIẾN TUẤN 2023 60x 40 cm acrylic on dzo paper Enquire works Lazy lady - Snoozy cat BÙI TIẾN TUẤN 2023 60 x 90 cm silk painting Enquire works Polka-dot Girl BÙI TIẾN TUẤN 2023 60x 40 cm acrylic on dzo paper Enquire related Catching Faces Faint Traces the sky, the sand, the lashing waves following the stone wall and we found an electric generator 6𝒗➡️¹/² The world as a draft The Fifth Cardinal Direction Spatium 47 Days, Sound-less in spaces of everyscape, at time without end </3 Hồi Sóng Birdsong on our pathway vol.
- Maritta Nurmi
oil/acrylic Maritta Nurmi biography Maritta is a Finish artist who had lived in Hanoi from 1993 - 2019. Her 26 years in Vietnam, together with an education in Finland both in natural sciences and visual arts have merged into an alchemist-like metallurgic experimentation in painting. Maritta equally enjoys exploring other genres of art, including ceramic art, wearable art, public art and community based art projects, as well as experiments with different mediums including painting on canvas, wooden or metallic objects, ceramic, oxidation of metal and fashion design, progressing from two dimensional to three dimensional formats. Her shuttling between different realms builds up new ways of expression and it generates vigour. Consequently, regardless of the medium or the imagery, the content in her art mostly stirs up energy and motion. In her works, Maritta is blurring the border between abstract and realist. Her use of ornaments and patterns adds layers of ritual, time and history. She has been showing widely in Asia, Europe and North America. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Floors & Flora 3 MARITTA NURMI 2020 29,6 x 42 cm acrylic on paper Enquire works Floors & Flora 1 MARITTA NURMI 2020 29,6 x 42 cm acrylic on paper Enquire works Stripes on copper MARITTA NURMI 2019 34 x 50 x 5(H) cm acrylic on copper Enquire works Floors & Flora 2 MARITTA NURMI 2020 29,6 x 42 cm acrylic on paper Enquire works Roses on copper MARITTA NURMI 2019 34 x 50 x 5 (H) cm acrylic on copper Enquire related Catching Faces Faint Traces the sky, the sand, the lashing waves following the stone wall and we found an electric generator 6𝒗➡️¹/² The world as a draft The Fifth Cardinal Direction Spatium 47 Days, Sound-less in spaces of everyscape, at time without end </3 Hồi Sóng Birdsong on our pathway vol.
