  • Xem Đêm Càng Đêm

Xem Đêm Càng Đêm - August 9, 2020 July 5, 2020 Nguyễn Đức Phương Nguyễn Hà "...In the distance the stars Nearby, fireflies..." – Phung Cung Manzi is pleased to present ‘Xem đêm- Càng đêm’ – a light art installation by visual artist Nguyen Duc Phuong (aka Phuong Gio) and architect Nguyen Ha. Divided into 2 different sections over a 4 week period, like 2 chapters of a novel, the light installation Chapter 1 - ‘Xem đêm’ and Chapter 2 – ‘Càng đêm’ is an intriguing combination of architecture and visual art, reflecting the similarities between the artist and the architect in the process of recreating space and form. Inspired by the traditional culture of the Northwest Mountains and the Northern Delta, ‘Xem đêm – Càng đêm’ comprises a series of 5 installations composed of 180 lamps in the form of everyday objects often found in rural areas such as bamboo baskets, ax blades, earthen cooking tripods and flint stones… as well as items used in spiritual activities in the Northwest Mountains such as bamboo cards, seals, stamps and fish-shaped wooden tocsins. The combination of traditional materials such as Dzo paper, cloth, indigo, coal and copper together with modern industrial materials like cast aluminum, composite and steel creates an unexpected visual and functional effect in the works in this exhibition. Like the poetry collection “Xem đêm” by Phùng Cung*, from which the exhibition borrows part of its name, the installation ‘Xem đêm – Càng đêm’ can, in a way, be seen as an act of ‘memory gathering’, an attempt to elucidate the nature of the night, its silence and its darkness. The exhibition will open at 18:30 on Sunday, July 5th at Manzi’s exhibition space, 2 Ngo Hang Bun street. Admission free *Phung Cung (1928-1997) is a famous Vietnamese poet and writer. His poetry collection ‘Xem đêm’ is a despairing but beautiful compilation of memories of the countryside of northern Vietnam. 'Xem đêm - Càng đêm' is part of Manzi’s art programme, supported by the Goethe-Institut. ARTWORKS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT See more about artist(s)

  • Into Thin Air | Manzi Art Space | Hà Nội

Into Thin Air A public art project A public space is a space that does not belong to anyone, but at the same time, to all. It is a site that doesn’t just hold its inhabitants’ history and memory, but also reflects their personal and collective identity. It is a place that is often neglected or forgotten, but has the potential to become a zone for creativity and freedom. About “Into Thin Air” is a long-term public art project, initiated and curated by Manzi Art Space with a view to building awareness and appreciation for art – particularly contemporary art – among the public, to helping artists develop independent practices whilst encouraging their involvement in social development within the current context of Vietnam. Into Thin Air takes art and creativity outside of its conventional comfort zones (i.e. the museum, gallery, art space etc.) and into public spaces. For the project, all participating artists were asked to consider their everyday urban spaces, or places in Hanoi that are significant to them and their community, and create artistic interventions for the spaces. The artists were also asked to take into consideration the city’s historical, political and social characteristics, to be more open and socially engaging, and to make works which encourage the public to participate or interact with it. For the project, The first edition of Into Thin Air took place successfully from 9 to 19 April 2016 in Hanoi. Ten artworks and projects in the form of site-specific/context-responsive installations, interactive video works and sound installations were placed around Hanoi. A smartphone app was created, functioning as a “treasure map” to aid the audience in “hunting” for and getting information about the works. Following the success of the first edition of Into Thin Air, the second installment continues to explore the core format of the project. It also furthers and broadens its scope by tackling a different type of public space: the Internet. Into Thin Air’s 2nd edition includes a series of virtual artworks (virtual installations, performances, sound-walks and video arts) which will exist permanently in 10 of Hanoi’s public spaces. Audience can view/ interact with a given artwork through a free online application using augmented reality (AR) technology which can be downloaded to their phone or tablet. All artworks exist virtually yet are only accessible at a particular site. This 2nd edition looks to promote the diversity of cultural expression to reiterate the importance of creating an enabling environment that encourages individuals and society as a whole to get access to and enjoy a wide range of cultural activities. • Then and Now, Hanoi streets in transition

Then and Now, Hanoi streets in transition - May 20, 2023 April 26, 2023 Nguyễn Thế Sơn 8 Façade photos by William Crawford and 8 Photo relief works in response by Nguyen The Son. Complementing this expose of everyday life in Hanoi is the exhibition in the Manzi Exhibition Space of 8 facades of houses in Hanoi by William Crawford taken nearly 30 years ago juxtaposed with the current 8 facades in photo relief that correspond to these images by Hanoi’s celebrated photographer, Nguyen The Son. For his response to William Crawford’s images, Son uses his own unique prize winning medium of photo relief that he developed while completing his master’s in photography at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, China in 2012. Building a 3-dimensional structure of layers of each photo, the artist makes the structure come alive, inserting into the street side all types of conveyances that change with the times from the pedicab to the bicycle to the motorbike to the luxury car, all symbols of the rapid transformation of the city. As neon lights take over gas lamps, bold advertising usurps the quiet somber atmosphere and pulses with the energy of contemporary life. A quiet contemplative beauty gives way to the cacophony and action of a modern-day city on the move, racing to the future. The Son is well known for his efforts to promote the arts of Vietnam through not only his own work but also through numerous public art projects that he has organized such as the Phung Hung Street and Phuc Tan project that brings art to the community by involving artists and the local people in all aspects to make art to benefit the culture, environment, and promote tourism. Art Vietnam Gallery and Manzi Art/Exhibition Space want to express our deep gratitude to the American Embassy for their generous support of this exhibition and also all the efforts of American artist David Thomas, founder of the IAP arts foundation without whom this exhibition would not have been possible. We also want to thank the photographer William Crawford’s son, William Crawford Jr., who accompanied his father in the past on some of his journeys to Hanoi, for dutifully and beautifully printing the works of his father. An homage to the love and respect for his father. Enjoy this walk into the life of our beloved Hanoi, past and present, moving forward with grace and dynamism. • Arca Noa

Arca Noa - February 5, 2023 December 24, 2022 Nguyễn Phi Phi Oanh Coming back to manzi after six years (since her solo exhibition ‘Scry ’ in December 2016), Phi Phi Oanh displays new results of her ongoing exploration in expanding the abilities and unfolding possibilities of the Vietnamese lacquer medium. ‘Arca Noa ’, features a series of 10 small and medium sized paintings from different series and two Lacquerscopes. "‘Arca Noa’ attempts to hold still and record, in lacquer form, our relationship to the earth and our will towards the domestication and objectification of nature around us. The works are conceived as vestiges of this epoch currently hanging in delicate balance and as iconography of its human centered gaze." The works here also explore a type of realism in lacquer based on repeated direct observation over many days and layers then sanding away like erosion - a journey simply reflects the passage of time, as well as fossilizes and preserves all the mental & visceral states of the artist along with the outer conditions of space. This whole process of continuous accumulation and subtraction, for Phi Phi Oanh, “leads to an image of the observed that seems to exist at different moments and times. While not tonally realistic like a photograph, this lacquer realism is more involved with the slippery ever changing experience of sight and of memory which I consider to be son ta’s major potential contribution to the field of painting. The paintings in ‘Arca Noa’ explore new representational models of son ta lacquer painting in both the physical (though experimentations on different materials and substrates) and in the symbolic (through what can be interpreted and a broadening of its theory). For Phi Phi Oanh, sơn ta lacquer is not an inert image - making medium rather it assembles a wide range of relationships in locality, culture, environment and nature. Objecthood versus dematerialization, domestication and possession, the physical embodiment of memory built to last, the correlations between the micro and the macro, between cherishing one’s own personal memories and questioning the position and scale of the human being, are some themes that run through Arca Noa. Through an embodied experience attending to the sense of sight, sound, and tactile navigation, PRISM - lăn[g] kính lăn[g] trụ - offers an experience that challenges the viewer to question the relationship between notions of memory and amnesia, home and displacement, and construction and destruction. Playing with the formation of memory and space through reflective distortions and through audience collaboration, based on the audience’s decision to actively participate or refusal to interact, PRISM - lăn[g] kính lăn[g] trụ - can be considered as a gesture to invite the viewer to experiment with their perceptions of a world that is emerging alongside another world that is possible. His ‘Body and Dream’ series, for which he achieved international recognition, was first exhibited at Salon Natasha in 2001. These paintings and sculptures are affectionately referred to as his ‘bums’ artworks and are still an important and ongoing part of Thao’s art practice. In 2006 Thao unveiled his first ‘Living Fossil’ sculpture series. He created a miniture model consisting of a house next to a power pole from each street in the Hanoi’s Old Quarter and cast each one in a cube of solid composite resin. • The subtle moves

The subtle moves - May 16, 2021 April 30, 2021 Curated by artist Nguyễn Thế Sơn Manzi Exhibition Space, No.2 Ngõ Hàng Bún alley, Ba Đinh, Hanoi 30 Apr - 16 May (10AM - 7 PM, Tuesday to Sunday) Free Entrance Featuring nearly 30 silk works, which are all composition assignments of art students in their final year of Bachelor’s studies, ‘The Subtle Moves’ introduces to the public the promising representatives of a new artist generation as well as offers the artists themselves essential motivation at their significant turning point. “Silk is inherently fragile and sometimes fairly elusive, thus, hardly becomes the first choice of many Fine Arts students. And even in case of someone who got attracted by this delicate material in the beginning of their art training, this path of practice is eventually not their pursuit after graduation. 'The Subtle Moves' is an effort to showcase latest works by students majored in Silk, Painting Faculty of the Vietnam Fine Arts University. As the teacher and instructor, who had a chance to observe and accompany students in a process of striving to improve/make certain ‘moves’ through each composition module, I understand that every attempt, no matter how trivial the ‘move’ was, had been a real struggle. And for me, such kind of struggle is very valuable, the moves resulting from this process, including both the enhancement of technique/skill and the shifts in thinking and reflection, not only are crucial for personal growth of every creative individual but also should be fundamental philosophy of the training system. These ‘moves’ need to be acknowledged and encouraged so that rather than being limited to the surface only in technical terms of characteristics, features or personal style, this ephemeral medium could go further to provoke thoughts and self-reflections in the audience. ” - Nguyễn Thế Sơn, curator of the show. • (E)MOTION

(E)MOTION - October 7, 2013 September 25, 2013 Knee Jerk Knee Jerk is a graphic designer, illustrator and stencil artist currently residing in Hanoi. His colourful work ranges from abstract to realistic, minimalist to high detail and anywhere in between. Usually, his designs begin in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and end up as large multilayer stencils that are painstakingly cut by hand before being sprayed onto canvases, walls and other objects. The focus for the (E)Motion exhibition at Manzi is a series of anomalous motion illusions and other optical art pieces that will make you wonder if you are seeing things or if in reality it is the artwork that is itself moving! As with all of Knee Jerk's work there is a social and environmental commentary within the pieces and rather than having a knee jerk (automatic) reaction to the work, the artist urges you to think about the art and its context to understand more fully the juxtaposition of geometric beauty and hidden meanings. This is the artist's first solo show and features a new body of work that promises to deliver a fresh taste of something you probably haven't seen before - Artwork that appears to move in some way, in what is the first gallery exhibition of stencil art in Vietnam's history.
