  • The Desiring Garden

The Desiring Garden - April 29, 2013 March 29, 2013 Jamie Maxtone-Graham The photography exhibition ‘The Desiring Garden’ showcases a series of fascinating works by Jamie Maxtone-Graham, an American photographer based in Hanoi. Produced within intensely urban Hanoi, Vietnam, the images in The Desiring Garden are the record of a place that exists between the projected and the perceived. "The images in The Desiring Garden prey on the Western perception of the exotic; a Rousseau-like play on an environment – here, the urban center of Hanoi - in which certain indigenous species of plants, some items of human utility and sources of nourishment are presented together in some arrangement alongside people with an uncertain relationship to these objects. The physical view of the people inhabiting the frame, observed within these embellished environments, is that of an outsider; of one who looks upon the scene - but not in - and, in turn, is unnoticed." • Nguyễn Đình Hoàng Việt

Nguyễn Đình Hoàng Việt biography Born in 1988 in Dac Lac, Viet grew up in Hue and holds a BA in Applied Arts from the Hue University of Fine Arts. Viet is best known for his trompe l’oeil portraits of animals (fish, duck, chicken, crab…) looking peacefully content, trancelike, as if captured by a wonderful dream. Although playfully depicted, the works seriously have us question our eyes, as on closer inspection all the creatures turn out to be dead. His second area of interest is everyday objects – for which he has been producing 2D replicas of things we see and overlook daily with his trademark photorealist precision: broken glass, a bent nail, pieces of paper and a wall crack. However, the obvious and mundane here is made obscure and abstract – not in terms of style but content. Objects perceived to serve a specific function are rendered useless: a painted nail cannot hold a piece of art, a painted crack cannot be fixed, a painted broken piece of glass cannot be swept up. Viet is able to provoke double-edged meanings and interpretations, whilst questioning the role and value of painting. His works are both witty and thoughtful, lighthearted and destructive. His recent notable exhibitions included: “The Language of the Images”: Hungarian – Vietnamese Contemporary Painting Exhibition – Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Hanoi & HCMC Fine Arts Museum, Ho Chi Minh city – 2018; ‘?!’ – Solo Exhibition at Manzi Art Space, Hanoi - 2016 works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Abandoned house 2 NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on photograph Enquire works Giant freshwater prawn NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on paper Enquire works Contented NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 38.5 x 38.5 cm oil and newspaper on canvas Enquire works Sumo NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 100 x 71 cm oil and newspaper on canvas Enquire works Two Fish NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2020 36 x 27 cm oil on paper Enquire works Drift NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2018 21 x 16.5 cm oil, pen, pencil on paper Enquire works Abandoned house 1 NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on photograph Enquire works The Fish NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 30 x 42 cm oil on paper Enquire works Escape NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on paper Enquire works Come in NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2023 42 x 30 cm oil on paper Enquire works Summer NGUYỄN ĐÌNH HOÀNG VIỆT 2019 12 x 17 cm oil on paper Enquire related what's going on at Manzi

  • Trương Tiến Trà

Trương Tiến Trà biography Born in 1979 in Thanh Hoa, Truong Tien Tra graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University and the Surikov Moscow Art Institute in Russia. Having always been fascinated by the lives of those living on the margins of society, Tra observes them with great sympathy and exquisitely conveys their stories into his works. which are both semi-autobiographical and observational, at times even meditative. Oil paint is commonly used by the artist, however, recently he has become more interested in using traditional materials and techniques such as lacquer, silver-leaf etching and metal work and water colour on dó paper. At first glance, Truong Tien Tra’s works appear minimalistic, with deliberation on shape, color and composition, his tone evincing a forlorn spirit, a dislocation of modern man between rapid industrialisation and traditional belief systems. Notable exhibitions include Hanoi March Meeting, Vietnam and Thailand, 2018; ‘Zen’, L’Espace, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2017; ‘Linh Thú’, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2016; ‘Portrait’, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2012; ‘The Distorted Truth 2′, Suffusive Art Gallery, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2007; ‘Oil Paintings’, Cheongju Museum, Korea, 2007; ‘The Distorted Truth 1′, Suffusive Art Gallery, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2006. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works A Dream TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire works The man sitting on the red chair TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2016 20 x 30 cm ink on dzo paper Enquire works The smiling fish TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm ink & color on dzo paper Enquire works Still Life TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire works Sitting asleep TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire works Style up TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire works Friend TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2017 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire works Self portrait TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire works Relax time TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire works Self portrait TRƯƠNG TIẾN TRÀ 2018 20 x 30 cm markers on paper Enquire related what's going on at Manzi

  • Lê Hoàng Bích Phượng

Lê Hoàng Bích Phượng biography Trained in silk and oil painting at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University, Lê Hoàng Bích Phượng who was born in 1984 in Ho Chi Minh City often humorously explores the experience of living in a society where one has to wear a kind of disguise, hiding their true self within. Working between silk, ceramic, oil and installation, Phuong’s art is in part inspired by her 2011 residency in Japan, evident in her soft brushstrokes and ethereal use of colour that is reminiscent of Japanese silk artist Utagawa and the contemporary paintings of Yoshimoto Nara. Phuong currently lives and works in USA. Phuong’s recent notable exhibitions include: ‘Beyond the hills’, Manzi Art Space, Hanoi - 2017 ‘Grapevine Selection Volume II’, Museum of Fine Art, Hanoi - 2015; ‘Above Under Sky’, Manzi Art Space, Ha Noi - 2014; ‘Occupy Utopia: Images Festival’, Aalborg, Denmark - 2014; ‘Women in-between: Asian Women Artists 1984- 2012’, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan - 2012; ‘Sapporo Biennale 2011’ , Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan - 2011; ‘Sai Gon Contemporary’, La Lanta Fine Art Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand - 2011,… works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Moonshadow LÊ HOÀNG BÍCH PHƯỢNG 2019 50.5 x 50.5 cm watercolor on silk Enquire works Sketch P. • Nguyễn Huy An

Nguyễn Huy An biography Born in 1982 in Hanoi, Huy An graduated from the Fine Art University in 2008. He is considered one of the most dynamic and innovative artists of his generation. Huy An’s work has been a process of trying to dig into the darkness of psychology. Most of his projects have been under-laid with an obsession with memory and the complexities of a pessimistic perspective. From installations, performance art to paintings and sculptures, Huy An’s works are highly acclaimed by international art critics and curators for their introspective and simple yet strong concepts. Huy An had 4 solo exhibitions: 'The four subjects' - Manzi Art Space, Hanoi - 2022, 'Âm Sáng' - Galerie Quynh, Ho Chi Minh City - 2019, ‘Calculus Exercise #6/5’ – Manzi Art Space, Hanoi – 2018 and ‘78 Rhythms’ - Galerie Quynh, Ho Chi Minh City – 2014; he also participated in numerous group exhibitions and performance art festivals (either as a solo artist or with his performance art group Phu Luc (Appendix) – which he co-founded in 2010) including: ‘Into Thin Air 2’ – the public art project, Manzi Art Space – 2018; ‘Looking for the Divine Beings’, Nha San Collective, Hanoi – 2017; ‘Vietnam Eye: Contemporary Vietnamese Art’ - Casa Italia, Hanoi – 2016; ‘14th Istanbul Biennial’ - Turkey – 2015; ‘Disrupted Choreographies’ - Carré d’Art Musée d’Art Contemporain, Nimes, France - 2014, ‘If The World Change’ - Singapore Biennale - 2013, ‘Sounds of Dust (Somniloquy)’ - 943 Studio Kunming, China - 2011. works This artist currently has no available work at Manzi works Toad (Pinky) NGUYỄN HUY AN 2010 40 x 50 cm ink & color pigment on dzo paper Enquire works Alley entrance NGUYỄN HUY AN 2021 44 x 34 cm color pigment on dzo paper Enquire works Pond (pink) NGUYỄN HUY AN 2005 80 x 45 cm watercolor on dzo paper Enquire works The Pond (green) NGUYỄN HUY AN 2014 40 x 50 cm màu nước trên giấy dó Enquire works Kite NGUYỄN HUY AN 2018 37 x 26 cm color pigment on dzo paper Enquire works Toad & Pavillion NGUYỄN HUY AN 2010 40 x 50 cm ink & color pigment on dzo paper Enquire works The Rain NGUYỄN HUY AN 2021 29 x 35 cm color pigment on dzo paper Enquire works The Pond NGUYỄN HUY AN 2005 60 x 80 cm watercolor on dzo paper Enquire works Kite NGUYỄN HUY AN 2018 37 x 26 cm color pigment on dzo paper Enquire works Kite NGUYỄN HUY AN 2018 37 x 26 cm color pigment on dzo paper Enquire related what's going on at Manzi
